umbrella kiosk

The project is a design response to the unpredictable weather in the UK and students not bringing umbrellas to university. The proposed solution was to create an umbrella sharing service through pop-up kiosks around the campus, which would as a pick-up or drop-off point for the umbrellas.

Initial Ideas

1:5 Physical Model

Lattice structure made up of laser cut plywood pieces, allowing it to be easily mass produced and assembled.

Umbrella Roof

The roof structure opens up like an inverted umbrella, and is protected within the timber lattice structure when unused.

Close-up of connections

Timber arms open to the side instead of outwards, creating a beautiful spiralling motion as the umbrella opens.

Masterplan

The umbrella kiosk becomes an iconic, sculptural element across campus, synonymous with the university.
